This kitchen was tired and ready to be refreshed. Two small windows allowed some natural light in but it was limited. In the ceiling, a bulkhead existed to accommodate fluorescent tube lighting. The homeowner requested that we work within the existing space but wanted it transformed. For starters, we removed the existing windows and expanded the opening to install a large picture window to bring in natural light as well as take in the views of the backyard. We worked with our engineer to ensure that we could install a new brick lintel and beam that would continue to support the 2nd level of this home. Another area of concern was to increase the space between the fridge/peninsula and also install a deeper fridge. To accommodate this we created a recessed space in the wall without affecting the laundry room behind the kitchen. There were little things that bugged the homeowner, like the hump on the floor that you felt every time you were in the space. We removed the two layers of flooring and subfloor so we could plane the floor joist to eliminate this hump. From floor to ceiling this kitchen transformed.
Through creative design and planning, we created a warm and inviting space for dinner for 2 or for a family gathering that will fill the room with laughter.
